First 2 weeks

Hunter will be two weeks old tomorrow. I am hoping that things start getting a little easier soon! People have told me that the first 2 to 3 weeks are the hardest. I sure hope that is true in this case. He wanted to be fed every hour yesterday, between that and the diaper changes it was nonstop. It is so weird to be so completely exhausted physically and mentally when I barely leave my room all day!

A friend brought us a huge tray of premade enchiladas yesterday. Looks like my lunches are taken care of for a while! One of my good friends is making us a Porkchop, sweet potato, and brussels sprout dinner tomorrow. The help is definitely nice. Otherwise, I'm eating a lot of sweets still. My hunger is absolutely out of control, especially yesterday when he was eating nonstop.

Parents always told me how hard having a newborn was. I thought I understood and sympathized, but I had no idea at all!

I went to Target and my local coffee shop with Hunter today, and that's about all the activity I had in my energy stores, Haha :)

Back in bed for the night, feeding him while watching television and napping when I can.

  1. Is it possible you are switching breasts too quickly and he is getting more foremilk and less hindmilk? Foremilk is for thirst/hydration and hindmilk is the richer stuff. I am not up on what they are recommending these days. My last child, who was a 9lb+ baby, I only nursed on one side per feeding, switching sides for the next feeding. That was how they used to nurse long ago. My grandmother had told me that. I am someone who produced a lot of milk. So, please be sure to check with a lactation consultant if you think this is a possibility.

    1. This is exactly like when you where first pregnant and learned to eat better balance/quality again to hold your blood sugar. Everything will be better if you eat more balance. You might need to eat meals closer together. You might need to eat during the night. (And what you eat does impact your milk (caffeine, etc).)

I never even got dressed the first two weeks, so you are way ahead of me if you went somewhere, and are posting. And you had a C-section, so being up and moving is pretty major.

It is a very big adjustment. Sounds like things are going pretty well.

Really enjoying your pictures and hearing how things are going.

  2. I usually feed from one breast per feeding, tell he's emptied it or falls asleep. If hes still hungry I will switch to the other side. He's so hungry so often!! I have appointments with the lactation consultant and the pediatrician early this week, just to make sure everything's going well, especially with regards to feeding!

    1. Ask the lactation about emptying a bit of the first side before you start. Ask her about emptying a bit of the second side if you are switching. Both so he gets more hindmilk.

Very good you are working with lactation consultant. They are very good, in my experience.

(In my experience medical offices often do not have good advice on breastfeeding. They do not have training. They think they know, but often they actually do not.)

  3. Be thankful you can breastfeed!! That's half the battle. I couldn't feed my son but did feed my daughter. It will get easier but then you know that. Enjoy the time and don't stress, it will all be fine.

  8. You're doing awesome to have gone out with the baby by yourself- and to make TWO stops in one day! Phenomenal. :) It took me a long time to feel comfortable doing that by myself.

I had the same issues with nursing practically non-stop with little sleep. I hope it has gotten a little better by now.
